Perth's pretty chilly this time of year - so we went to Berlin

Berlin's John Linton took the hot seat last Thursday and joined Carma for some unscripted banter, career advice, and lament to campaigns that never saw the light of day

Our favourite passionate marketers braved the cold to steer the conversation into hot takes and cool career stories regarding campaigns, strategy, purpose - and the nuance between Marketing and Advertising.

John Linton detailed the journey that saw him Co-found Berlin and focus his vast experience into behaviour change for good with work for The Australia Institute, the WA Forest Alliance and others.

He spoke about his experience with working in large agencies both here and on the east coast, and told his story about going from suit, to strategist, to independent agency owner.

Linton said:

"I loved the Grill's intimate, laid-back format - students just starting out and seasoned pros in the same room, all wanting the raw, unfiltered stories from my career."

Some fabulous questions were asked by our curious audience, who ranged from senior client-side marketers, marketing students, and a slew of agency folks of all levels.

Guests were reminded that the work we do is always better when we believe in what we're doing, and can align our work with our personal beliefs and passions.

MC Mike Drysdale said:

"The intimate nature of GTM seems to allow a level of candour I don't find at many industry events."

He added:

"I'm always hoping the panel says the quiet part out loud."
"This month, that turned into a conversation about ethics and how to approach leadership about clients with which you'd prefer not to work"

Perth proved it's "big country town" label when it was revealed it was an audience member's agency that picked up the replacement campaign to the shelved one John had earlier discussed.

Carma discussed one of her favourite topics - Leadership V Management, and highlighted some evidence that the future is Indi.

The next Grill Guest was announced as Luke Whelan - Business News 40Under40 recipient and Founder of Perth Is OK! and Social Meteor, on Thursday July 23rd.
