Grill The Marketer July - Tim Woodsmith

July's Grill The Marketer event saw over 55 of you converge on The Court to Grill Rare’s Director of Strategy, Tim Woodsmith.

Tim spoke about re-positioning NRMA from an insurance company to a help company, and the effects that had on the entire business.

We chatted about his former client, Qantas, and whether they can win back the public after falling so far from our graces.

There was talk about not just competing within categories, but challenging long ingrained behaviour - like Aussies love of beer, and convincing them to swap it for Canadian Club.

There were many questions around brand strategy in general, like how you get buy-in from the business, how do you go about formulating the strategy, and what it takes to implement it.

We loved hearing about Tim’s career path, experience, recent campaigns and projects - and what he is hoping to achieve for Rare's clients in this new role.

There was an incredible fail tale, which still blows my mind at little bit (although I probably shouldn't be that surprised) but overall so much love for the industry that we may all turn into Woo Girls.

Tim did an incredible job at being open, humble and providing detailed answers - it's not an easy thing to have a panel to yourself.

He's facilitating the ACA Advanced Strategic Planning course in September, so if that's of interest to you find out more here.

Representatives from industry groups were in attendance including AMI and ACA and were joined by both client-side and agency marketing leaders, lecturers and researchers.

And since Ning Choi only used one photo, LinkedIn will let me embed his post 👇

Thanks to Gabe Mach for filling in for Keith as our Mic Man.

New to the event (and Perth) Sofia won the Sin Gin Door prize. Cheers to her 🍸
