Seb Brandt, C-suite Marketing Executive Cycling 4000km Across America, Shares Learnings Providing Reminders for Marketing, Business and Life in General
Seb Brandt’s name has popped up in the marketing world on many occasions, as a changemaker at Ingham’s, Top 25 CMO, MFA Awards Judge, CMO Summit Presenter, brand and innovation lecturer…but for three months this year Seb has swapped the boardroom for a bicycle as he cycles 4000 kilometres across America on ‘The Deliberate Detour’ - which is about finding clarity, shaking up routines, showing the importance of taking time out and that sometimes the best way forward isn’t always a straight line.
Seb has been sharing his learnings from the road, many of which have strong crossover with marketing, business and life:
Preparation matters – “It’s probably a good idea to have ridden the bike before setting off on a three-month tour.”
The challenge is part of the reward. And the stories? Well, they make it all worth it. “Took a wrong turn and ended up on a hiking trail... with my 30kg bike. No water. 2.5 hours of dragging, lifting, and questioning why I didn’t just take up chess instead. Easily one of the toughest moments so far…It’s days like these that remind me — the challenge is part of the reward. And the stories? Well, they make it all worth it.”
You can’t learn everything from Google – “When I mapped this leg of the journey on Google, it looked pretty flat… reality had other plans (think hills, snow, and a humbling terrain check). Reassessed my route and planning skills – learning as I go! Ask the locals… like in business… experience and knowledge trumps all.”
